Could this be the best move of your career?
The secret to a powerful career is right around the corner.

The power of inspection—is it in you?
A lot of mechanics talk about getting their IA. Few actually go out and do it. Some never think they’ll need it. Others are intimidated by the process. And many just let it slide, year after year, even when they’re fully qualified to apply.
That’s a mistake.
Getting your Inspection Authorization (IA) is one of the most valuable things you can do in your career as an aircraft mechanic. Whether you want to increase your authority, sharpen your knowledge, sign off annual inspections, or just open up more doors professionally, your IA is a license to do more.
Let’s walk through what the IA actually is, why it matters, how to get it, and why it will be one of the best decisions you make as a technician.
What exactly is an IA?
Inspection Authorization or IA, is an additional FAA certification available to experienced A&P mechanics. Holding an IA lets you:
Sign off annual inspections on Part 91 aircraft
Approve major repairs and alterations
Oversee progressive inspections
Make airworthiness determinations
Return aircraft to service after major work
These privileges are powerful—especially in general aviation, where most aircraft need annual inspections and constantly undergo major upgrades and repairs. This is your license to inspect, sign off, and lead.
Why you should get it
Every qualified A&P should go for their IA. Here’s why:
Become more valuable
Not only does an IA make you stand out on paper–it makes you shine in person. You instantly become more credible in a shop, on the floor, and with customers. Your decision-making is sharper, and your leadership is clearer. When a Director of Maintenance is choosing between two techs, one with an IA and one without, the IA gets picked every time.
Make better decisions
The IA isn’t just about authority—it’s about knowledge. You’ll get better at navigating:
Airworthiness directives (ADs)
Instructions for continued airworthiness (ICAs)
Type certificate data sheets (TCDS)
You’ll understand what’s airworthy, what’s legal, and what’s not—and how to prove it.
Work on your own aircraft
This is why I did it. I had full control of my aircraft’s inspection status and could approve major work without bringing in outside help. This is huge for mechanics who want to fly their own machines.
Open your own shop
If you’re thinking of starting your own business, the IA opens the door. You can build a shop around annuals, major repairs, or even progressive inspection programs—all under your own authority.
Aim for the sky
Your IA puts you in the decision-maker’s seat—not just turning wrenches, but calling the shots. It’s more than a credential; it’s a career multiplier. Whether you want to lead inspections, start your own shop, or just have more say in the work you do, the IA gives you that authority. Don’t let hesitation hold you back. If you’re qualified, take the leap, and take control of your future.
